Hi!

There is a bit of a commotion over a.o. the etymology of this word. To my best knowledge it is a back formation out of the english 'taxonomy' which in 1828 was derived from the french taxonomie (1813 I beleive) which was coined by famous Swede (Linnaeus) but a bit wrongly because the Greek word is not taxon (neuter) but taxis (feminin). I have no idea how and where Linnaeus is supposed to have done this but I think he wrote in French or in Latin not in Swedish (is that so?). Also the swedish taxonomi has no final -e. How recent is that?

That (taxonomi>taxon, Taxonomie>Taxon) seem to be the case according to Swedish dictionary NE [www.ne.se] and according to german Wiktionary. It means that "taxon" is not taken directly from greek ταξις (taxis), but rather short formed from (T/t)axonom(i/y/ie) to (T/t)axon. Since tax is used from taxis and then added an -o- interfix and finally -nomi/-nomy/-Nomie. tax- -o- -nomy. I don't know why the short formation came to be just taxon, but maybe they just thought about it as -on being a greek suffix so it was good enough. I don't think the word came directly from taxis to taxon, this may be why it ended up looking wrong. Of some reason though, atleast in Swedish, the plural form is constructed like other greek words on -on (taxon - taxa) rather than normal Swedish plural constructions (taxon - taxoner). Bestämd form plural?

Hur böjer man taxa till bestämd form? Taxan, taxana, taxas, något annat? Ainali (diskussion) 26 augusti 2022 kl. 21.25 (CEST)

Jag tror inte det finns något bra svar på den frågan. Precis som med lexikon (eller ord som medium, centrum, spektrum) så blir det tokigt med den bestämda formen om man använder "-a" i plural (flera lexika, media, centra, eller spektra). Språkvårdare brukar avråda från att använda böjningsformerna med "-a" i plural. Gabbe (diskussion) 26 augusti 2022 kl. 22.19 (CEST)
